Defined was born in 2008, the month my biggest boy turned 2.5 years old. Here is her story, written during her creation:
As if carved from stone or wood, through whatever and wherever: mother remains. Coming and going as the child reaches out and then pushes away… We relish the moments when our children need us close ~ ask for us to lay and stay and play.
However, the balance of life and the world says we must also love the moments when they push us away ~ when they ache for individuality, big-ness and autonomy. This life/work/position/gift of being ‘mother’ is painful and soul-soothing. All at the same time.
Defined peeks at one of my favorite poses, created many times over my career. The way the child fits perfectly against and into the mother’s neck and shoulder. Chest to chest, heart to heart.

It’s Thursday ~ so I have a new original MINI painting to share ~ it is my joy to have a mini painting in process in the studio each week ~ a little emotion, a little gift.
