Here is why I chose her name, Symphony & Stillness: I’ve been going to the beach my entire life, so I have a multitude of impressions of it, from dirty to pristine, from raucous to peaceful, based on my experiences. You may know of one deeply affecting experience in the ocean that shaped my life, and I consider that an umbrella over all other sandy encounters.
My most recent time at Cannon Beach in Oregon had me in a different life stage. Now a mother of teens who no longer need me daily, a wife of 21 loving and growth-filled years, a self-employed artist of 20 expectant, exciting, and trying years, a best friend to someone whom I never thought I’d know the likes of.
What struck this trip was the lack of silence at the beach. In memories I imagine a hush, clear air and perhaps birds chirping.
But this time, a rushing symphony that couldn’t be avoided, a non-stop throb that sinks into your soul and awareness and becomes a sort of silence of its own, blocking out all else. I spent hours of stillness on the balcony, people-watching to the point of blurry eyes, staring at the sea and studying her ripples and her random, rolling dance. This ocean that I have such a mixed relationship with, she who takes but also gives; gave me hours to watch in silence. She encased me in her natural symphony of not-actual-silence.
There is an abundance of expectation and joy billowing out of Symphony & Stillness... a vision of a perfect moment or an ideal place. In this piece are tiny elements that I didn’t anticipate creating (like, ever!): a grandparent and child playing ball, a gramma and child flying a kite, an expectant couple relaxing on a blanket, a little couplet making sandcastles, and a big family frolicking. A little set of twins… and something hidden even deeper, for you to find. Each little figure thrills in its simplified but delightful form. People-watching at its best, and I love watching people living their good lives.
A beautiful soul considers it all from above, her perch is soft and welcoming, her shoulders warm, her face shaded. She’s earned this reprieve and will spend hours here amongst the swaying foxgloves and the symphony of the sparkling sea. All will be well. Let’s join her, if only for a moment.
