I Am In Charge ~ a meditation

post by Katie m. Berggren

There are times when we feel like we are running around like chickens with our heads cut off, barely certain of what the next moment will bring. Responding to this and that…

I sometimes get onto this track ~ and for me it is not so much that I busy myself with things ~ I pride myself on not “busy”ing myself except with things that I think really matter. This becomes a very important balancing act of pros & cons.

For me, as I respond to this and that, I begin to feel as though I am not in charge of my own time. Orders come in and I gratefully pack them; supplies run out and I order more; supplies come in and I strive to shelve them (within a decent amount of time); tummies get hungry and I work to fill them; messages and emails come in and I take time to respond to them… These are all very important activities; however, when they pile upon each other for an extended amount of time, I begin to feel more “reactive” than “proactive”.

One of my intentions this year is to focus on being more proactive: happening to my day, my life – versus letting life happen to me, versus letting the days disappear with me wondering where the time went.

Not feeling “in charge” of my time, activities, and moods leads to bouts of resentment for the activity I am doing in a given moment ~ a lack of say.

I recently gave a shot to using a new mantra while meditating: “I Am In Charge…”. Such as, “I am in charge of how I spend my time; I am in charge of what I put in my mouth; -what comes out of my mouth, -how I treat my family and myself, -what I do in my day, -how much time I spend online, -my general attitude… ~ but HOLD UP!

Let’s just focus on a few things at a time: like being in charge of how we spend our time, or how much sleep we get… I found that this gentle exercise that allowed warm feelings of empowerment to creep across my chest and soothe me, could quickly escalate into a laundry list of all of my responsibilities. That’s not the point.

Try it, and let me know in the comment box below, if you, too, sensed your empowerment.

Love & Sincerely, Katie
